Planners are always striving to
understand their audiences. Increasingly this means they must seek to
understand the large proportion of attendees who are 18-30 and in the
ascendance: the Millennials. Knowing what they want and how they respond to
messages and technology will be of ever increasing importance to the savvy
event planner. This week’s post brings you a number of ideas.
Technology
People may think that Millennials
are tech savvy. Maybe, tech dependant would be a better description. They have
an expectation that tech will be at the heart of what they do, see and
experience. They don’t know a world that is not connected or did not have the
internet. This means event planners need to plan with this need from the
outset. Practical measures include: high bandwidth broadband, charging
stations, useful apps and second-screen technology so attendees can interact
and access presentations from their devices.
Interactivity
Millennials interact both with each
other and with content, before, after and during events. They do this face to
face and virtually – you need to enable this. To really embrace
interactivity requires it to be built into the plan. Their needs to be event
hashtags, a dedicated team to handle social media questions and the possibility
for speakers to field questions via social media after the event has taken
place. While radical, some are asserting that the real event is just a
highpoint in interaction, with virtual interaction taking place over a much
longer time frame. This view challenges what an ‘event’ actually is.
Learn by doing
The Millennials are much better
predisposed to learning about things by finding out and play. This is
acceptable to this generation, who think nothing of opening a new gadget,
ignoring the instructions, and just figuring out how it works. You can design
content with gamefication in mind, to make it competitive and fun, to make use
of this trend. You can also think about how you get your message across, making
use of smaller more dynamic working groups with problems to solve.
Sustainability
The Milennials are environmentally
aware than any preceding generation. They expect events to be low impact and
sustainably staged. This is a trend we’ve witnessed elsewhere and there is
abundant information on this blog to help you plan a sustainable event. You
just need to know that it’s expected, so consider this in your promotion and
event literature with the Millennials in mind.
