A pair of Pennsylvania regions has been named two of the 10 best destinations for fall foliage in USA Today’s 10Best.com project.
The top 10 destinations selected by a readers’ choice popular vote from a list of 20 compiled by the 10Best.com editors and a panel of travel experts, from No. 1 to No. 10, are the White Mountains, New Hampshire; Upper Peninsula, Michigan; Pocono Mountains, Pennsylvania; Gatlinburg, Tennessee; Ozark Mountain Region, Arkansas; Taos, New Mexico; Door County, Wisconsin; Laurel Highlands, Pennsylvania; Stowe, Vermont; and Finger Lakes, New York.
Here’s what the editors had to say about each of the Pennsylvania regions on the list:
No. 3, Pocono Mountains: “The Pocono Mountains are ablaze with hues of red, orange and yellow come autumn, thanks to the area’s 127 species of indigenous trees, plants and shrubs. Leaf peepers can hop in the car for a scenic cruise along Route 507 near Lake Wallenpau pack or climb aboard a fall foliage train.”
No. 8, Laurel Highlands: “Fall foliage in the Laurel Highlands usually peaks in mid-October, making the Pennsylvania region an ideal fall getaway destination. Go for a drive along Laurel Highlands Scenic Byway with a stop to see Frank Lloyd Wright’s Fallingwater framed by colorful leaves or take a scenic hike in Ohiopyle State Park.”

Winners in the fall foliage destination category were selected by readers’ choice through a month-long online contest that encouraged travelers to vote daily for their favorite place to explore for fall.
The Laurel Highlands was ranked No. 3 on last year’s best fall foliage list, as well as previous designations as one of the top best new destinations for the Flight 93 National Memorial’s Tower of Voices and one of the best attractions in Pennsylvania for Ohiopyle State Park.
The Laurel Highlands spans 3,000 square miles of Fayette, Somerset and Westmoreland counties in southwestern Pennsylvania.
The Pocono Mountains encompasses more than 2,250 miles of Carbon, Monroe, Pike and Wayne counties in northeastern Pennsylvania,
